ChatLicense and Fairphone collaborating to encourage responsible smartphone use

Dutch social enterprises Fairphone and ChatLicense have signed an agreement for a brand collaboration designed to help children use smartphones responsibly. Fairphone will soon gift ChatLicense—the “driver’s license” for a child’s first smartphone—to their customers. Both companies are already strongly aligned value-wise, with their respective missions to positively disrupt the electronics industry and create a more sustainable and socially responsible digital world. Both companies will be present at the Dutch Pavilion at MWC in Barcelona, next week from March 1-4.

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the mobile communications industry aims to improve ‘responsible use’ by consumers.

Marjolein van Osch, Head of eCommerce at Fairphone comments, “At Fairphone, we deliver high-quality smartphone and audio products using ethical materials and responsible production. But for us, sustainability is not just about our products—it’s about building a better future. That’s why we are very happy to join forces with the award-winning app, ChatLicense, that offers families a ‘driver’s license’ for their child’s first smartphone. With this science-backed program, we will empower families to overcome the challenges of connected technology, while also unlocking the great potential it comes with. We want to nurture digital well-being, just as we nurture our planet.”

Martine de Leeuw, co-founder of ChatLicense, adds: “To realize a safe, sane and happy generation of smartphone users in the future, children need to know what they can and can’t do. Adults need to be able to help them with this, but reality shows that this is difficult on many levels. With ChatLicense serving as a “driver’s license” for the child’s first smartphone, we tackle the root cause and make sure families have a better start with mobile connectivity. Our mission is to realize happy cyber vibes all over the world, so we are very excited about this partnership with Fairphone. With them we are crossing borders for the first time, as they will make the app available for free for their customers across Europe. Together, we strive for better smartphone usage in all aspects, across all ages. We believe Fairphone is a great option for parents who want their child’s first phone to last longer as it’s durable and the parts are easily replaceable.”
